Chapter Fourteen

Wrath

We retired to the barn, but the complaints and arguments against Ava's plan continued.

We were settling down, Kate climbing into the sleeping bags I'd joined together while I helped Audrey and Jo set up their own area off to the side.

"Just wait," Audrey threatened, shooting Ava another glare. "Lottie's gonna freak."

"Lottie's gonna do what now?" Lottie asked from the hayloft ladder. Her mass of curls were limp, dark circles stark against her pale skin.

"What the fuck, Lottie?" Ava demanded, immediately moving to wrap an arm around her sister. "How much blood did you give him?"

"Not enough." She rubbed her eyes, allowing Ava to escort her to a pallet. "We'll need to give him more in the morning."

"Well you can find someone else," Ava barked, easing her sister down. "You're wrecked."

"Just tired." She sat, curling arms around her knees, laying her chin on them. "Now, what am I gonna freak about?"

"We have a lead on Jules and Lilith. But it's at a flesh market. Some kind of MMA hunger games shit. Ava wants her and Ghost to go." Audrey crossed her arms over her chest, her expression mulish. "We're protesting."

Lottie looked at her sister. "Reliable information?"

"Enough."

"You'll be careful?"

Ava grinned. "Am I ever?"

Lottie chuckled, lifting a hand, and limply waving it. "Go with my blessing then. Just make sure you come home."

Audrey spluttered for a moment then threw up her hands, spinning around. "That's fine. No one care about the risks or vulnerabilities. No one care that the percentage of this working in our favour is less than eight. No one care about the fact it's a one in twenty-two million shot that Jules and Lilith are even at the Circus."

"Audrey?" Pope called from where he lay on a pile of hay, one hand tucked behind his head, his eyes closed.

"What?"

"Go to bed."

She blustered for a moment, then sighed. "Fine."

She dropped beside Jo, crawling into her sleeping bag, and rolling over to give us her back.

I saw Kate watching Audrey expectantly. The woman didn't disappoint.

She pushed up, twisting back around. "Just know, Ava. I'm logging a formal protest. You get yourself killed and I will find a way to clone you just to bring you back and slap you for this."

"Noted," Ava replied, tucking Lottie into the sleeping bag. "Goodnight, Audrey."

With that, Audrey rolled over, huffing.

The hayloft may not have been the most comfortable place to sleep but it was warm and safe. A privilege in the after.

I crawled into the sleeping bag with Kate, pulling her drowsy body close.

"You okay, Sunshine?"

She nodded, her body settling against mine. "Just tired."

"Rest," I whispered against her hair, ignoring the aching of my cock as it responded to her nearness. "We'll deal with the world tomorrow."

As Kate grew heavy against me, slipping into sleep, and the sounds of those around us eased, I considered our future.

Life would never return to the familiarity of the before. It couldn't. Things were too broken, people too changed for it to return.

Though, having lived in a society built by men who hated guys like me, I couldn't say I found it a bad thing.
